Perhaps more than any other American holiday, Thanksgiving is associated with a specific menu. Turkey is the main event, attended to by dutiful side dishes like cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, green been casserole, and followed by Aunt Gertrude’s sweet potato pie and a medley of other classic flavors.
But hey, it’s 2015 — maybe it’s time to break out of the traditional Thanksgiving mold, if even just for one year.
As temperatures drop and cold winds blow, I keep lapsing into a tropical day dream: I’m lying on a beach taking in the sparking blue water. A warm breeze sweeps over lush hills covered in purple, red and orange flowers. I’m sipping something fruity and am far, far away physically and mentally from a single care in the world… Sounds enticing, huh?
Well, not one to totally give up on my dreams, I decided to fuse my tropical fantasy with the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday. I’m throwing a “Friendsgiving” — a casual friends-only Thanksgiving — this Sunday, and am infusing the flavors and decor with a tropical twist for a totally unique experience.
Inspired by Thanksgiving celebrants of Hawaii, I came up with a simple menu and decor ideas to help get your Tropical Thanksgiving going. Add dishes and decorations according to the island spirit and the number of guests you are expecting. Watch my video tutorial below and get ready to luau in November!!
